WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

In 2006 I had the honor of being part of CCSJ's Civil Rights Conference. It was everything that I imagined it to be and more … it increased my knowledge of my history and ways that I can make a change. I was motivated to go back to my community and influence other youth on how to become community builders for a more just society.

OUR ORGANIZATION

Many of you will know that for over 60 years, NCCJ Charlotte was part of a network of NCCJ regional offices throughout the country governed under one 501 (c) (3) with its national headquarters in New York.  On June 30, 2005, the National Board of NCCJ passed a resolution stating that, each NCCJ region (is) authorized to proceed to incorporate a separate nonprofit corporation that will qualify for tax-exempt status.  Therefore, on September 1, 2005, NCCJ Charlotte was incorporated in the State of North Carolina as an independent local nonprofit and we received our tax exempt status effective August 8, 2005.  Throughout the process, we never missed a beat in terms of delivering programs and services to make our community more inclusive.  Moreover, for the first time in our 62-year history, every dollar raised in the Charlotte region was spent in the Charlotte region - to advance our mission and to buy the services we need to run the organization.  At the same time, we have maintained strong ties with our colleagues around the country so that we can all mutually benefit from sharing information and best practices to help us more effectively to fight bias, bigotry and racism in our communities.
In order to maximize the local impact of our resources, we decided not to affiliate with our former national organization.  Therefore, we rebranded our organization to reflect this change, beginning with the search for our new name.

  • We wanted to express our pride in and connection with our community – so we put Charlotte in our name.
  • We wanted to show that we bring individuals and groups from different backgrounds and sectors of society who are concerned with different issues together to work for change – so we put Coalition in our name.
  • We wanted to define our goals and aspirations for Charlotte Mecklenburg and beyond – to reflect our basic sense of fairness and our belief that race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, ability status or any other aspect of a person’s identity should not determine their lot in life – we put Social Justice in our name.

We are proud to announce the future of NCCJ Charlotte - the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice (CCSJ)
In addition to choosing our new name, we worked to redefine our vision and mission so that, while they would carry forward the strong tradition of NCCJ, they would also more clearly reflect our aspirations for our community and our approach to our work.

OUR VISION
The vision of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice is of an inclusive community in which there is access, equity and justice for all people.

OUR MISSION
The mission of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice is to build community and advance the cause of social justice by developing leaders who will work to dismantle all forms of    prejudice, discrimination and oppression and create positive social change.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

OUR LOGO
Our logo further reinforces our identity and our work.  Our designer used the “C”s in our name to create interconnectedness, bridging and a safe place in which to undertake the hard work of building relationships across lines of difference and dismantling prejudice, discrimination and oppression.  And then we tagged it with our intention and our aspiration, “Building an inclusive community

Our logo design was generously donated by Christopher Baier.
