About CCSJ
Our Vision
The vision of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice is of an inclusive community in which there is access, equity and justice for all people.
Our Mission
The mission of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice is to build community and advance the cause of social justice by developing leaders who will work to dismantle all forms of prejudice, discrimination and oppression and create positive social change.
Our Commitment
The Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice will deliver high quality, year-round leadership development programming and outreach that will equip and empower youth and adults to address issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in our community.
Our History
The Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice is the successor organization to NCCJ Charlotte which for over 60 years, was part of a network of NCCJ regional offices throughout the country with its national headquarters in New York. With the demise of NCCJ National, on September 1, 2005, NCCJ Charlotte was incorporated in the State of North Carolina as an independent local nonprofit. We re-branded our organization to reflect this change, beginning with the search for our new name.
We wanted to express our pride in and connection with our community – so we put Charlotte in our name. We wanted to show that we bring together individuals and groups from different backgrounds and sectors of society to work for change – so we put Coalition in our name. We wanted to define our goals and aspirations for Charlotte Mecklenburg and beyond – to reflect our basic sense of fairness and our belief that race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, ability status or any other aspect of a person’s identity should not determine their lot in life – we put Social Justice in our name. In addition to choosing our new name, we worked to redefine our vision and mission so that, while they would carry forward the strong tradition of NCCJ, they would also more clearly reflect our aspirations for our community and our approach to our work.
