What is Charlotte Walks Together?
It is a community Walk designed to celebrate Charlotte’s diversity and promote inclusion in our community while raising money for the work of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice.
Where does the money raised from the Walk go?
The money raised from the Walk is used to maintain and expand CCSJ’s youth education programs here in Charlotte. Programs such as Anytown; Anytown II; Bring It On; Rising to Meet the Challenge of High School; Peace Journeys; Youth Empowerment Council; and Weekend Workshops help to develop leaders who will work to dismantle all forms of prejudice, discrimination and oppression and create positive social change.
What does a Team Leaders do?
A Team Leader serves as the primary organizer of the team. The Team Leader recruits walkers, helps them to set and meet fundraising goals, and tracks team progress for CCSJ. We encourage team leaders to set a fundraising goal of $100 per team member. It is often helpful to create a fun team name and even a team t-shirt to promote the team’s identity.
How long is the walk?
The Walk is about two-miles through uptown. The route is intentionally short to encourage families and children to walk together.
Who will participate in the Walk?
Families, clubs, schools, youth, religious groups, civic organizations and corporate teams.
How many people have to be on a team?
Any number of people can form a team. In fact, the more the merrier! In the case of corporate teams, we encourage team leaders to recruit 20% of their department and to identify colleagues in other departments who will do the same.
Who can I contact if I have questions about the Walk?
Beth Walker is available to answer any questions. Contact her at bethwalker@earthlink.net or 704.535.9220.
What if I can’t raise $100?
Raising $100 is easier than you may think; however, we do not want to exclude anyone from participating and everyone is encouraged to walk, no matter what they have raised.
Are donations tax deductible?
Yes, all donations are tax deductible. CCSJ will send out thank you letters that can be used as official receipts for IRS purposes.
Is there a fee to participate?
There is a commitment fee of $5 before May 25th and $10 after May 25th. The commitment fee can either be raised through donations or paid by the walker. The fee will count towards your individual and team total. Charlotte Walks Together Corporate Sponsors that have teams are not required to pay a fee. This commitment fee helps Walk organizers estimate how many participants to plan for and how many T-shirts to order. It is also a great way to begin your team’s fundraising efforts.
